Essentially, this breed was created by mixing longhaired Persian cats with color pointed Siamese cats. The result: A longhair cat with the color point pattern.
Himalayans, fondly known as Himmies by the breed fans, are stocky cats, displaying the unique body and face of the Persian breed. Like their Persian brothers, they can be either flat faced, with the distinct modern peke-face, or they can have the more traditional facial structure, known as doll-faced. Their color point coat pattern (markings) can be in many colors and shades, including solid points (such as chocolate point, blue point, red point), lynx points (where you find tabby markings on the colored areas), or even varieties of tortie points (with three colors present in the colored areas).
The Himalayan is a recognized breed in TICA (The International Cat Association) and the ACFA (American Cat Fanciers Association). In fact, the ACFA even recognizes Himalayan cats that come in solid colors, rather than a colorpoint pattern. The Himalayan is not a recognized breed in the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association), where these cats are considered a variant of Persians.

While Himalayan cats resemble the Persians in build, they are usually a bit more active. These are intelligent and friendly cats that require extra grooming and care, due to their long coat. Peke-face Himalayans may require even more grooming to manage secretion from the eyes and nose.
